WHAKATANE HOSPITAL

When clarity
is critical

When New Zealand’s Whakatane Hospital expanded, a new wayfinding strategy was developed to help guide patients, staff and visitors every day.

For this ambitious project, Diadem brought its expertise in wayfinding for health and its holistic approach from strategy to design and implementation.

A strategic
approach

An extension at the Whakatane Hospital in New Zealand included a new emergency department, ambulance bay, staff offices, surgery facility and wards for paediatric, surgical and medical patients, as well as an internal courtyard space.

Diadem undertook a comprehensive wayfinding strategy for the interior of this new extension, followed by design and documentation of the wayfinding signage based on those recommendations.

As with all of Diadem’s work in the health sector, the signage needed to be clear, practical, economical, future proof and aesthetically pleasing.

Health
sector experience

Diadem’s wayfinding strategy included reviewing terminology, journey planning, information hierarchy and consideration of legibility. It emphasised simplicity and consistency of messaging, reinforced with appropriate environmental cues including colour, lighting and landmarks clearly and concisely, and considered a range of issues, including visual impairment.

Diadem’s integrated model allowed a seamless project from strategy to concept design, documentation and implementation.
