Industry Lanes is a mixed-use precinct developed by Salta, bringing new commercial, retail, lifestyle, dining and community spaces to Melbourne’s inner-city suburb of Richmond.
With multiple destinations, entrances and users to consider, Diadem was engaged to create a wayfinding strategy that would draw people within and help to establish a thoroughfare from Brighton Street to Church Street. The street frontage was also considered to increase activity through the Shamrock Street ground level.
The site comprises multiple buildings brought together by a common plane. Diadem presented a new building name strategy, as all buildings fall under the same address.
As well as traditional offices and retail spaces, the campus style of the precinct also features several “in-between” spaces from open-air courtyards to shared work zones.
Intuitive wayfinding and simplified external and internal signage ensured navigation was straightforward. Clear identification of office and retail spaces has the additional benefit of making the new precinct more attractive to prospective tenants.
The architecture by Architectus took cues from Richmond’s industrial past and Federation and Edwardian design. Our signage needed to feel at home against a robust palette of brick, steel, concrete and timber.
Diadem similarly looked to the area’s built heritage, and an era when “neon lights became night beacons.” Our design concept, therefore, used illuminated neon lines as a directional device, as well as building letters presented as either neon bright yellow paint.
The result is an inviting, connected and communal precinct destined to be thriving new precinct for Richmond.
