World Square

Thinking inside the square

At World Square, a new wayfinding system enables thousands of visitors to easily navigate the complex retail environment every day.

From entries to laneways and across multiple buildings and levels, Diadem’s system brings clarity to one of Sydney’s busiest mixed-use precincts.

As the first layer of a more comprehensive site-wide strategy, the system establishes the key design elements that will carry through to a wider application.

The outcome is a cohesive, brand-aligned experience that supports legibility, orientation and future growth.

Finding a clear path forward

World Square is a residential, retail and dining precinct in the heart of Sydney’s CBD. This busy destination spans a city block and features a major shopping centre, hotels, office towers and apartment buildings.

To enhance the user experience across this complex, multi-entry site, Diadem began with a comprehensive audit of the precinct’s physical conditions and user journeys. Key recommendations included enhanced signage at entry points, clearer directories near elevators, digital wayfinding on the lower ground and identification of the laneway names via an embedded naming strategy.

Bringing a precinct together

Following the audit and stakeholder engagement, Diadem developed a concept design direction aligned with World Square’s brand and diverse user base. The new system balances best-practice wayfinding principles with bold visual expression.

A primary brand colour was used to unify the site and support navigation, designed to help visitors identify key entry points and understand the precinct as a single, connected destination. The challenge was to deliver a strong visual impact without compromising clarity, creating signage that’s easy to follow while enhancing the centre’s energy.

Laneways given new life

A major outcome of the project was implementing a new laneway strategy. Each of the seven laneways was given a distinct identity, reinforced with applied naming embedded directly into the floor surface. This supports orientation and adds texture and character to the public realm.

The signage suite introduced a cohesive design language across the site, with clear hierarchies and consistent use of type, colour and form. These elements combine to create a more legible and connected experience for the thousands of people who pass through World Square daily.

The result is a system that not only improves the day-to-day experience but also lays a strong foundation for future growth and long-term brand presence.
