ROYAL CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

The royal
treatment

Before the Queen and Duke of Edinborough opened Melbourne’s expanded Royal Children’s Hospital, Diadem implemented extensive signage and wayfinding.

As a specialist advisor, Diadem was able to bring together the creative designers, head contractors and client principal to deliver more than 10,000 signs across this world-class hospital.

A welcoming
environment

As with any space, a hospital has an opportunity to contribute to the emotional and physical well-being of those in its care. For a hospital dedicated to the health of children, the careful consideration of every space is critical.

The expansion of Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital led with this philosophy, designed to bring its offer into the 21st century, and treat thousands of additional patients every year.

The bright and welcoming wayfinding uses colour and floor patterns to ensure everyone can find their way easily around the hospital, and a ‘main street’ which runs from the entry through to Royal Park.

Individual care
on a large scale

Diadem was engaged by Lend Lease through a competitive tender to deliver the new wayfinding system designed by Buro North. Time, cost and quality imperatives needed to be met with minimal compromise to the project objectives.

The project management, communication and site coordination were as crucial as the production of the new hospital signage.

The significant scale of this project included 10,700 wayfinding, statutory, safety and traffic management signs, 300 suspended signs, 620 graphic wall elevations and 1800 square metres of digitally printed panels.

Expert wayfinding
implementation

A critical factor in Diadem’s engagement was managing risk and contractors. With content and issues unresolved, final quantities unknown and a changing floorplan and configuration, Diadem needed to be flexible and responsive.

Diadem established an approval and production process which ensured efficiency was maintained. Working under pressure within a 10-month timeline for full implementation including completion of existing and additional scope, Diadem successfully managed client expectations along with design changes and variations as they surfaced.

The result is a clear and welcoming experience for patients and their families, reducing anxiety and delivering certainty within an iconic hospital.
