What does “better banking for all” look like in the built environment? Diadem partnered with the newly branded People First Bank to reimagine how a modern branch can lead the way forward.

Diadem undertook a national rebrand programme as the design consultant for People First Bank’s built environment, including shopfront signage, ATM casings, and internal branch graphic elements. Diadem was subsequently awarded design commissions for sky signs in Adelaide and Brisbane.

Two brands
become one

When Peoples Choice Credit Union (headquartered in South Australia) and Heritage Bank (headquartered in Queensland) merged, they became People First Bank. Representing more than 700,000 members, the bank positions itself as a national alternative to the major market players.

With its deep experience in the banking sector, Diadem was appointed to design a “sign family” for the new brand as it prepared to roll out across the country. This signage not only reflects the values and vision of People First Bank, but also meets the needs of its customers and staff.

A user-first
approach

Diadem shares a “people-first” approach with People First Bank. Understanding the needs and motivations of users within branches was fundamental to designing successful signage and wayfinding, especially when introducing a new brand to an existing base and the wider community.

Diadem held workshops with various stakeholders within People First Bank to discuss design and outcomes, drawing on their deep knowledge of customer needs. Representatives from branch operations, marketing, ATMs, technology, and property were all included in the process.

Illuminating
options

One of the key challenges was integrating the design and architecture of the two brands’ existing branches where the new brand would be brought to life. This included exploring how to construct the three “floating” elements of the brand mark and illuminate the brand’s dark blue ribbon in the built environment.

Building on its experience with previous bank signage projects, Diadem developed a new strategy for sign types and sign families. Following prototyping, signage contractors were engaged to roll out the new signage to branches in South Australia, New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland.
