RMIT UP

When art leads the way

Bold environmental graphics across multiple levels showcase RMIT’s innovation and creativity, combining signage and wayfinding with student artworks and staff initiatives.

Diadem delivered a signage and environmental graphics program for RMIT UP, integrating a student artwork showcase, window glazing treatments and wayfinding elements, while adhering to RMIT’s Design Standards.

Shaping the student experience

RMIT UP is an international education pathway provider located in Melbourne’s CBD, comprising nine levels within a tower that also includes student accommodation by Scape. Diadem was engaged to implement RMIT Design Standards across a range of environments, adapting these to suit external building signage, a shared reception identity with Scape, and custom room iconography.

Diadem was also tasked with showcasing RMIT fine art students’ artwork as well as activating a staff initiative space to become an Innovation Garden within the workplace.

A canvas for creativity

Corridor end walls served as the backdrop for large-scale arrival moments featuring student artworks, with two overlays per composition. Diadem curated and merged complementary art pieces, which were adapted to the building’s interior palettes with the artists’ endorsement, to create a cohesive visual experience across all levels.

For the building’s Innovation Garden space, Diadem reimagined the mandatory regulatory glazing safety strip as the organic central stem of a leaf viewed from a microscopic perspective. Organic cells and veins weave together across the glazing, referencing natural systems such as river networks and the human nervous system. Dynamically coloured dichroic vinyl was used to reinforce the space’s themes of innovation and organic complexity.

Bringing everything together

The completed wayfinding system brings clarity to daily movement through the building, supported by a directory hierarchy that uses inverse colour treatments to clearly identify locations. These subtle adaptations strengthen orientation and usability, reinforcing intuitive navigation across shared and individual spaces.

This project also created a unique opportunity for student involvement, integrating original artworks while adhering to design standards and regulatory requirements. The result is a series of environments shaped by student participation and reflective of RMIT’s signature culture of innovation.
